Project Narrative

When you name your home brewery after the house you lived in during college, it’s important to keep those college qualities when you launch your brewery. The identity for Platypus Brewing company started way back when my sister was trying to create a flag of her then boyfriend’s house sign for his birthday. The flag artwork I developed became the base for the brewery’s identity.

I was tasked with creating artwork for the flag based on the pictures provided. The original art came from a brother in their fraternity who only knew how to draw platypuses, so that’s what they named the house. In recreating, I tried to keep the original hand-drawn qualities.

Flag Based on the House Sign

Metal Sign of the Platypus Brewing Logo

When developing the logo for the home brewery, I pulled in the artwork from the flag as my base. I set to choose fonts, something that had that hand-drawn quality to it, reminiscent of a sign you’d see at a camp. I turned the logo into a metal sign he could display in his basement.

When creating the labels, we opted to create fill-in-the-blank beer labels instead of labels for each beer. It allowed him to handwrite whatever beer it was before taking it places or distributing it among friends.
